Kyle Buckley of Sierra Air Conditioning and Heating says it's a good idea to get your system professionally checked twice a year: once in the spring, and once in the winter. Regular maintenance can catch little problems before they become expensive.
"It is a very harsh environment, the desert southwest," Buckley said. "It really beats them up with the sun on them."
Inside the home, Buckley says it's all about changing the filters. Some manufacturers say every 90 days should do it, but it can depend on your lifestyle.
"Someone who keeps the system colder in the house, it's going to be running longer which means more air through the filter, it'll dirty up quicker," he said. "More pets in the house with pet hair things like that."
Even with tip-top maintenance, the average A/C unit only lasts about 15 years in Las Vegas.
