THIS IS A NON-SPOILER REVIEW
"What should have been a great movie turns out to be, well, a bit slow and boring"
Most times, when you add two plus two, the correct answer is four. But to this film critic, sometimes, when you add two plus two -- when it comes to the movies -- the incorrect answer can be seven. Fake math? Absolutely not. For sometimes, the incorrect answer does not make any sense.
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS has all the hype. And all the expectation to be a monster box office hit. And yet, sadly for this film reviewer, this remake is kind of slow and boring.
We have here a film whose screenplay is based upon a storied Agatha Christie novel. This screenplay is from Michael Green (LOGAN and BLADE RUNNER 2049). The 1974 film today is considered a classic. The verdict is out for the moment.
We have here a film directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh. He has a remarkable award-winning background in both stage and screen. He has appeared in 36 films and directed 18 films. He probably appears in 85-percent of the movie.
We have a dream cast that includes Branagh, Johnny Depp, Leslie Odom Jr., Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucy Boynton, Dame Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, and Willem Dafoe. This indeed is a blockbuster cast.
And, don't forget to include the Oscar-caliber Cinematography work from Hans Zambarloukos. He should have a lock on a nomination.
Same holds true for Costume Designer Alexandra Byrne who actually already holds an Oscar. The costumes are marvelous.
Art Design by Dominic Masters (TITANIC, BATMAN, and HARRY POTTER).
Set Production Design by Oscar-nominated Rebecca Alleway.
It also has Patrick Doyle who has composed the musical scores for almost 50 major films.
So why the average "C" score? Somehow, what should have been a great movie turns out to be, well, kind of slow and boring.
Indeed, sometimes two plus two can actually equal seven.
See the movie for yourself. You decide.
