Child shot near Warm Springs and Fort Apache identified
UPDATE: The child has been identified as 4-year-old Bradley Whitis.
LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) -- A 4-year-old child has reportedly been shot and killed in the southwest valley.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the incident was reported just before 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 9500 block of Chandler Springs Avenue near Warm Springs Road and Fort Apache Road.
“The LVMPD received a call regarding a child who had been shot in a residence," said LVMPD Officer Larry Hadfield. "Patrol officers responded and attempted to give that boy aid until he was taken to UMC where he died.”
The child was transported to an area hospital with a gunshot wound. Officers confirmed just before 3 p.m. that the child has died.
Police say the shooting was an accidental discharge, according to an initial report.
“I’d like to take this time to say, as parents, it’s very, very important to stow your firearms in a safe way," said Hadfield. "It is imperative as gun owners, you stow your firearms in a safe way. It doesn’t matter how old your kids are. It doesn’t matter where your kids are. They should be locked up at all times so tragedies like this don’t happen in our community."
LVMPD is investigating the shooting at this time.
It is unclear who the gun belonged to or who pulled the trigger.
News 3 learned late this afternoon that the little boy's grandfather, father, and brother were all home when the shooting happened.
