Design contract approved for Convention Center expansion, groundbreaking set for January

For nearly the past quarter century Las Vegas has been known as the convention capital, drawing millions to our city every year.

On Tuesday, the LVCVA board officially signed off with a company called TVS Design to design the newest section of the convention center, a 1.4 million square foot expansion on the former site of The Riviera.

"These are some of the most brilliant architectural minds in the world, and they put together a design concept that is going to be absolutely phenomenal," said Board Charmain and Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.

While the official renderings aren't complete, concept photos released by the LVCVA give us an indication of what to expect.

Weekly says not only will it add space, it'll be technically state of the art, visually beautiful and give Las Vegas an edge over convention competitors in other cities.

"Our goal is to show them we're number one for a reason, and we have all the goods and services, no need to look anywhere else," said Weekly.

The fact that it will now have a Las Vegas Boulevard address, Weekly says this will also generate more interest around the world. He also believes we'll begin to see a transformation on that end of the Strip.

"I believe it is going to breathe life into that corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara where it's dark and it needs to be resuscitated," said Weekly.

Work on the expansion begins January 8, with completion expected by 2020.
