Woman found shot in the back of the head in business parking lot near UNLV

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman found shot in the head in a business area in the southeast Las Vegas valley.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Latoya Norgina Woolen. Her official cause of death was a shotgun wound of the head and neck and the manner was ruled a homicide.

Officers were called around 8:45 p.m. Sunday evening to the 1000 block of East Flamingo Road, near Maryland Parkway, according to Lt. David Gordon of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

According to police, a woman was shot in the back of the head.

Paramedics were called, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses discovered her body in the parking lot of a business area just north of the UNLV campus.

Detectives do not believe it was a robbery since the victim still had jewelry and a wallet on her.

The victim was carrying three grocery bags from a nearby Dollar Tree and police are now looking at surveillance video in the area.

Police believe the victim may have been sitting or standing on a short wall when she was shot from behind at least once.

At this time, there are no details on a suspect and the motive is unknown.

This is the 34th homicide investigated by the LVMPD in 2017.
