Man arrested after leaving infant in car while shopping at local dispensary
LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) —
Raashid Yahya was caught and cuffed on Tuesday. He's now facing charges of child abuse and neglect for a crime many describe as unthinkable.
According to police records, officers were called to the Jardin Marijuana Dispensary on East Desert Inn Road shortly after 4 p.m.
Police received a report of a child left alone in a parked car with the engine running and doors unlocked. The responding officer was quoted as saying, "I observed a small infant child, approximately one-year-of age, located in the rear of the vehicle, sitting in a child restraint seat."
While the officer tended to the baby, police records show multiple employees from the dispensary came out to offer assistance. After several minutes Yahya appeared as well, telling police he only went inside there dispensary to use the restroom. But when officers made contact with a front desk employee, the employee confirmed he never used the restroom, but in fact was observed interacting with other employees and shopping around for merchandise.
According to the arrest report, the baby was left alone in the car for nearly 10 minutes and was handed over to Child Protective Services.
It also turns out that Raashid Yahya is not the father of the child but his girlfriend's baby.
Yahya is scheduled to appear in court next week.
