Homeless man found dead near downtown Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the murder of a man in the heart of downtown Las Vegas.

Police say a homeless was hit on the head. It's the second murder of a homeless person in downtown in the past month.

Homicide detectives were at the scene of a man found dead near the intersection of Grand Central and City Parkway early Friday morning. It's a sight Eric Stevens feels is becoming familiar. He passes this intersection daily to get to work. Just last month the body of a 46-year old homeless man was found on the other corner.

Stevens said, "Somebody found a body over there. Not for sure what happened but they found a body over there."

Lt. Dan McGrath with LVMPD homicide said, "He appears to have head trauma which is consistent with a blow. At this point, it does not appear to be natural."

Police say the victim's friend found him laying in a blanket. Lt. McGrath said, "The person that found him was his friend. Apparently, this is his usual sleeping spot every night." The homicide is very concerning for Stevens who says he leaves work late at night.

Stevens said, "This is like the second time. It kind of creeps me out. I work here after work. You don't know what's going on."

Detectives say it's too early in the investigation to link these homeless deaths together.

Lt. Dan McGrath said, "There a vulnerable group. Sometimes they fight amongst each other. I can't say for sure there is someone targeting homeless."

Anyone with any information about this incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
