Rip-Off Alert: Mail theft takes bizarre turn outside Portland, Ore.
LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) —
Mail theft is becoming a common crime, and Clackamas County, Ore., is no different.
What is different is what’s being left behind.
Neighbors have noticed their boxes tampered with for at least a week. Our Sinclair station in Portland reports at least two instances of thefts in the past five days.
In one case, though, something was delivered – a dead rabbit was stuffed into one of the mailboxes.
Homeowners have installed new security cameras and will soon get a more secure mailbox.
U.S. postal inspectors says mail theft happens regularly. They advise not to leave mail overnight; that's when mail theft happens the most.
Also, if you leave town, ask the post office to hold your mail.
And there's a new feature called informed delivery, which sends you a notification with photos of the pieces of mail you should be expecting.
