Rip-Off Alert: Mailbox thefts at Miami apartment complex done by neighbors
LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) —
Residents of a Miami apartment complex were shocked to discover the suspects in the mailbox thefts were two of their neighbors.
Denise Richardson found out she was a victim of this crime with a knock on her door.
“I peeped through my peep hole, and there was a postal inspector with a sheriff that knocked on my door and, asked to come in … and provided to tell me that I had been a victim,” she said.
She was recovering from neck surgery at the time and admits she let her mail accumulate for several days. It was also her birthday.
“The money is replaceable,” she said, “but the birthday cards, the little notes from family and friends. You know, in today’s world with everything being electronic, to get something physical like that is so warm and I felt robbed of that by these suspects.”
U.S. postal inspectors say more than 100 residents had their mail stolen. they urge consumers to pick up their mail daily.
“If you are not available to pick up your mail, have at trusted friend or neighbor pick up the mail for you,” said U.S. Postal Inspector Blanca Alvarez.
Richardson says she now goes to her mailbox every day. She is grateful the suspects were arrested quickly.
“Security cameras for any sort of an apartment complex should be a no-brainer,” she said.
Postal inspectors also want consumers to know that if you ever notice pry marks on your mailbox, immediately inform your complex manager or your postal carrier.
