The first alarm assignment for North Las Vegas firefighters on Christmas Eve morning surprised two families with toys and holiday cheer.

Firefighters and members of some other organizations departed Fire Station 50 to surprise the Hernandez and Washington families around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Lights and sirens replaced reindeer and bells as Santa and his elves delivered toys to the special families on Carey Avenue.

Each family was nominated by the school counselor at Quannah McCall Elementary School as part of the annual North Las Vegas Firefighters Christmas Family Program.

The local community, through a toy drive held by the firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation, donated toys for the families.

Hernandez is a single grandparent raising six children on her own, and Washington is a single mother raising two special needs sons.
