A man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after a shooting east of downtown Las Vegas.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting was reported around 12:14 p.m. in the 2200 block of Elm Avenue near Eastern Avenue and Stewart Avenue.

Police say the incident was an attempted murder-suicide and the man shot himself after shooting the woman.

"We checked to see if there's any other domestic violence calls at this house and there were no past calls, so we don't know what caused the argument or problem today," said Lt. Mark Lourenco.

Officers located the two victims who were transported to UMC Trauma in critical condition. The man later died at UMC.

"It's weird that we have that kind of problem. We lived here for 10 years, never happen, nothing," said neighbor Vincente Barranco.

Barranco says he knew his neighbors as a friendly couple.

"We grew up with them, they didn't have arguments or nothing like that, they were calm," said Barranco.

"Once she's in a condition she can speak, we do have detectives down at the hospital that are trying to talk to her, she's obviously being treated at the hospital, but they will get a statement from," said Lt. Lourenco.

The incident remains under investigation.
