WASHINGTON (CIRCA) - Northwestern on Wednesday issued an "all clear" following reports of a man with a gun on its campus, adding that police had determined the incident was "a hoax."

Emergency services were reporting a "person with gun" on Northwestern's Evanston campus. Authorities asked students to shelter in place until police said it is safe.

The person was believed to be in Engelhart Hall.

Evanston Police were considering the incident a "shots fired investigation."

A photographer on the scene received a call from Northwestern University Police saying, "this is not a drill." A picture he posted on Twitter shows police officers taking cover.

Author Deborah Copaken posted a text she received from her daughter who attends the university. Copaken's daughter texted, "person with a gun on campus I love you I think everything's fine there's a lockdown drill I love you."

Police on Wednesday said"there is no evidence of a victim, scene or gunman found." A large police presence remains, however, causing major roads to remain closed.

Wednesday's emergency situation happened as thousands of students walked out of their high school campuses across the country to protest against gun violence. The day has become unofficially known as National Walk Out Day.
