Russell Gollard M.D. is Medical Director at Nevada Cancer Specialists. He and his team of health care providers specialize in oncology the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

“Cancer is really many different diseases, and the way in which it presents is often times insidious meaning it doesn’t raise and flag and say “I’m here” that’s why screening is so important. Cancer treatment involves three main treatment modalities after diagnosis namely surgery, radiation therapy and drugs and the challenge is really getting someone into a place where they can receive sate of the art care” said Dr. Gollard.

Some of medical terms can be hard to understand:

As we mentioned, oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer

Chemotherapy is a term many are familiar with is it the treatment of cancerous diseases with drugs that interfere with cancer cell growth and reproduction

Hematology is the study of blood in health and disease. It includes problems with the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen and the proteins involved in the regulation of bleeding and clotting

Radiation Oncology is the use of carefully calibrated, regulated and targeted doses of high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells

Immunotherapy is treatment that uses your body’s own immune system to help fight cancer

“We, (Nevada Cancer Specialists) already have six providers, 2 locations, soon there will be a third, but our flag ship location at the corner of Rancho and Charleston. 55,000 square feet with radiation oncology, surgical oncology and medical oncology will be opening early 2018. So I think there are some really are some exciting things happening in cancer care in Southern Nevada and we are part of it!”
