4 tips for successful post-hospitalization recovery
If you’ve had a planned or unplanned stay at a hospital, planning for your recovery at home is critical to ensure that you don’t end up back in the hospital. Here are some things to do now to make sure you (or your loved one) can safely rest and heal at home.
1.Carefully review the recovery instructions before you leave the hospital. If possible, ask for what you’ll need a day before you’re released so family and friends can help you prepare, especially if you need special equipment or have dietary restrictions. Make sure you understand how to take any new medications and get clarification on how these new drugs should be timed with your current prescriptions.
2.Check with your insurance to see if there are any benefits to help you recover at home. Many Medicare Advantage plans include delivery of medical equipment and visits from home healthcare workers like home health aides, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Some even can help with transportation and meal delivery.
3.Keep in touch with your medical team. If you are unsure of anything about your care, confused by your medication or dietary restrictions, or you feel like you’re getting worse, contact your doctors right away. Go to your follow-up appointments and check-in with your primary care provider, so they are aware of your condition, any medications you may be taking, and can adjust other prescriptions if necessary. And if you have any complications, go back to the same hospital. Research proves that patients with post-op problems who returned to their original hospital were 26 percent less likely to die within three months than those admitted to a different one.
4.Ask for help, especially if you’re living alone. After surgery, you may need help with day-to-day tasks, like bathing, dressing, cooking, and getting around. Don’t be afraid to ask for aid when needed! If you can, have a friend or family member stay with you until you can safely return to your regular day-to-day activities.
