It’s being called a random act of violence.

A 71-year-old Las Vegas woman was grabbed in front of her home and raped.

According to police, the victim was alone and bringing in her trash cans when the man forced her into the garage and assaulted her.

It happened around 10:00 p.m. on February 4th in a neighborhood near Nellis and Hacienda.

Police need help tracking down the man who did it.

James Conlan has lived in the neighborhood for a few years and said he’s often outside in his driveway working on car.

"As far as I know, it’s been a good neighborhood. It’s a shame. It shouldn’t have happened,” said James Conlan.

It’s a frightening thought for Joanne Watt who’s lived in the area since 1974.

"I take my trash cans out sometimes at six, seven, eight or nine o’clock at night,” said Joanne Watt.

"I’ve got a dog. She’s not gonna let anybody get near me,” she explained.

"This is a very, very serious crime and unfortunately we don’t have a lot to go off of right now,” said Officer Larry Hadfield.

Hadfield says the man is described as Hispanic, 6 feet tall with a muscular build. He was last seen wearing dark clothing and a stocking cover his face.

"I would suggest, when you go outside, regardless of the neighborhood you live in, whether it’s gated or not, always be aware of your surroundings,” explained Hadfield.

"Talk with your neighbors. A lot of folks have these Ring doorbells. If you have motion late at night or you’re seeing suspicious activity, you don’t have to go outside,” he continued.
