LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A Sandy Valley man is accused of killing his girlfriend after the woman's daughter called 911 to report the shooting last week, according to an arrest report from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.
David Kashich, 62, was taken into custody on suspicion of open murder for the death of Deborah Wheeler, 61, on Thursday.
LVMPD had said investigators believed there was an argument and that Kashich allegedly shot Wheeler at their home in the small desert community
In their arrest report, police say that Wheeler's daughter called 911 and said Kashich had shot her mother. Officers arrived to find Wheeler suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kashich's mother also arrived at the home. She told police her son called her and asked her to come, and she gave them Kashich's phone number. Police briefly spoke with him and he surrendered from the backyard workshop, according to the arrest report.
The daughter told police she heard Wheeler and Kashich arguing. Wheeler said "Get out of my face!" so the daughter went to the bedroom, but Kashich yanked her by the hair down to the floor. She said Kashich was on his knees when he pointed the gun at Wheeler and she heard the gunshot.
Kashich told officers that he had lived with Wheeler for the past seven years, the report states. He said they were arguing, and that Wheeler confronted him about stealing money.
He claimed Wheeler might have hit his hand, causing the gun to go off, but police countered that witnesses reported Wheeler was more than an arm's length away from him.
Kashich is being held at Clark County Detention Center without bail. An initial court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday morning.
