Crypto-JudaismSalazarLAS VEGAS (KSNV) — 19-year-old Michael Miller is behind bars, accused of shooting and killing 47-year-old Raul Salazar inside of his home they shared near Lake Mead Boulevard and Decatur Boulevard.
The shooting happened on Sept.19. Red Rock Search and Rescue crews found Salazar’s body the next day while they were searching for a different missing person.
Police say Salazar died from multiple gunshot wounds.
A detailed arrest report reveals that after he died, his body was bound and wrapped using household materials, then placed in a sleeping bag and dumped near Lake Mead.
According to the arrest report, Michael's uncle, Joseph Miller, told police his nephew called him in a panic the day of the shooting. When Joseph got to the home, he saw Salazar lifeless on the floor. He admitted to helping his nephew dispose of Salazar’s body.
When Michael was three years old, he and his four-year-old old sister were playing with a lighter and sparked a house fire. His sister died, and the fire left Michael with one hand, no feet, and burns to 95 percent of his body.
News 3 covered the incident back in 2003.
"People were trying to get in,” said Timothy Szymanski the day of the fire. “There's about a half dozen to a dozen fire extinguishers on the ground."
Joseph told police that Michael woke up the day of the shooting to find his mother wasn't home. He started crawling across the floor to reach his prosthetic legs, and that's when he claimed Salazar cornered Michael and became hostile. He says his nephew opened fire in self-defense.
Police say Joseph is facing one felony charge for his role in disposing of the body. Michael is facing one count of open murder. He's set to be back in court Tuesday morning.
