A dog was shot by a deputy U.S. Marshal who responded to a woman screaming in the area of North Hualapai Way and CC-215 early Wednesday morning.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the shooting happened around 6:30 a.m.

The woman had been exercising in her garage with the door open when the unrestrained pit bull came into the garage and attacked the leashed family dog.

“She went to separate them, and it started attacking her and the dog at the same time," Assistant Chief Deputy Marshal Steven Carpenter said. "When the deputy responded, the scene was actively going on, she was actively being attacked.”

When the deputy marshal approached the residence, he saw his neighbor being viciously attacked by a pit bull. The deputy marshal shot the dog twice in an attempt to stop the attack. The dog limped across the road and collapsed, dead.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene and summoned an ambulance for the injured woman. She was then taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for multiple dog bites.

“On her hamstring, her calf, and then one of her hands, that I visually saw," neighbor Larry Arias said. “Thank god for the neighbor, the U.S. Marshal, that happened to be going to work and heard everything.”

Investigations into the situation will happen, according to Carpenter.

“So, the investigation itself about the dog attack will not be ours," he said. "But we will do a use of force report since our deputy did use force.”
