Health officials in Hawai'i are warning residents about travel to Las Vegas, saying the destination "poses significant risks" when it comes to COVID-19.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office said in a statement this week that many of its COVID-19 cases come from people who have traveled.

The Health Office noted that Las Vegas is a popular vacation spot. The valley is often referred to as the "Ninth Island" due to its popularity with Hawaiian locals looking to travel or even relocate.

"The popular activities are largely indoors and can be crowded," the Health Office said. "Visitors stay indoors for prolonged periods, mingling with others from all over the country. Masks are not required. The result is a set-up for the spread of COVID-19."

Nevada has the fifth-highest COVID-19 case rate per capita in the U.S. over the last seven days, according to federal health data. The vast majority of those cases are in Clark County.

Clark County commissioners this week approved a new mask requirement for employees in enclosed spaces. The requirement does not apply to guests or customers.

Hawaiian health officials are asking residents to get vaccinated before they travel and wear a mask indoors.
