1 suspect dead, 1 in custody after chase & shots fired in downtown Las Vegas

One suspect is dead and another is in custody after officers exchanged gunfire with them around Downtown Las Vegas Wednesday morning.

At 7:02 a.m., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police responded to a shooting that occurred in the 1400 block of North Eastern Avenue. The call indicated a subject at a car was shot multiple times by a male suspect. The suspect left the area in a large black Ford Expedition, which was driven by another Hispanic man.

At 9:30 a.m., in the area of 29th and Constantine Avenue, investigators observed a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting.

When detectives attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver bolted at a high rate of speed and officers initiated a vehicle pursuit. During the course of a lengthy pursuit, the suspects shot at officers several times and one officer returned fire.

In the area of Ogden Avenue and 18th Street, the pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into the wall of an elementary school.

The suspects attempted to flee on foot and one of the suspects was shot and killed on the scene. The other suspect made it on the campus of Hollingsworth Elementary School and was taken into custody without further incident.

Preliminary investigation indicates two officers fired their weapons during the course of the incident.

The victim from the early morning’s incident died from his injuries at UMC.

This is the 10th officer-involved shooting of 2018. Per LVMPD policy, the identity of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours.
