Authorities say they have located the body of a hiker reported missing out of Zion National Park.

Park Rangers say a friend dropped off the hiker, identified as a 47-year-old man from northern Utah, at the East Rim Trailhead at about 4 p.m. Monday.

The hiker was reported overdue around 10 p.m. when he did not meet the friend at Weeping Rock Shuttle Stop as planned.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the National Park Service said the body of Maurice Harris was located at the end of Deertrap Mountain Trail.

Plans are being made for the safe recovery of the body.

"This is an extremely sad event," Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh said in a statement. "Our thoughts go out to Mr. Harris’ family and friends."
