LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Joe Lombardo has officially been sworn in as the 31st governor of Nevada.
Nevada Supreme Court Justice Lidia Stiglich administered the oath of office to Lombardo, the former Clark County sheriff, during a small-scale ceremony at the Old Assembly in Carson City Monday.
He joined other statewide officeholders who also took their oaths of office, including former Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony, who becomes the new lieutenant governor of Nevada.
Though Monday is a state and federal holiday for observing New Year's Day, Nevada law dictates that the governor take the official oath on the first Monday of the new year following an election.
A more formal inauguration ceremony for Lombardo is planned for Tuesday, also in Carson City.
Lombardo, a Republican, enters office after a contentious gubernatorial campaign against Steve Sisolak, his Democratic predecessor who served one term.
He will also work with a Democrat-controlled Assembly and Senate during this year's legislative session, which begins in February.
His first State of the State address is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23.
