A Las Vegas personal injury attorney is accused of taking about $1.8 million in settlements intended for his clients, according to police.

Detectives began investigating Matthew Dunkley in March this year on reports from clients that he misappropriated financial settlements they were supposed to receive from a case, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.

Clients also reported that he took money from insurance companies that was supposed to cover medical bills, and they are now being held responsible, police say.

Detectives allege Dunkley took about $1.8 million in total that was supposed to go to clients.

Authorities found Dunkley on Monday, Dec. 10, and took him into custody. He has been booked into Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of 39 counts of theft.

Police say the allegations were also reported to the State Bar of Nevada. Records from the State Bar indicate Dunkley was suspended from practicing law in October last year.
