LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police on Wednesday released video from an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect critically injured.
The suspect in Sunday's shooting, identified as 42-year-old Jody Lucas, was apparently intoxicated and was yelling while holding a firearm at the Siena Suites complex on Boulder Highway.
A department helicopter arrived to the scene and spotted Lucas on a third floor armed with what appeared to be a sub-machine gun, Assistant Sheriff Christopher Darcy said.
Lucas pointed the gun at the helicopter, which reported what happened, according to Darcy. Lucas went back into the apartment and came out a few minutes later with nothing in his hands.
A sergeant arrived on the scene and heard Lucas say he would get a gun and shoot people, Darcy told reporters.
Lucas was back in his apartment by the time a team of officers arrived on the third floor. He came out of his apartment with a firearm and pointed it toward someone near the pool.
Three officers fired at Lucas, who turned and aimed his firearm at the officers, according to Darcy. He was hit multiple times and ran down to the ground floor.
As he was running, two other officers opened fire. He eventually fell to the ground, and officers applied tourniquets before he could be taken to a hospital.
Darcy said Lucas is still in critical condition as of Wednesday and has been booked in absentia on several charges, including four counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person.
Police say Lucas had two BB guns that resembled machine guns. He did not fire any rounds during the incident.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police identified the officers involved as Officers Brendan Hansen, Daniel Lapolla and Austin Lea and Sgts. Justin Diebold and Stephen Trzpi.
