Trustees for Las Vegas valley public schools met Friday morning to discuss violence in schools.

A special board meeting of the Clark County School District Board of Trustees was held after multiple trustees called for adding an agenda item to a future meeting.

In emails released by CCSD, Trustees Linda Cavazos, Irene Cepeda, Danielle Ford and Lisa Guzman all agreed that a discussion on school safety is necessary.

"I'm sure you have viewed the poor student that was bludgeoned in the head by a fellow student," Guzman wrote in an email to Cepeda. "I am also sure you have heard public comment about police using pepper spray at Basic High School. [CCSD Superintendent Jesus] Jara had [staff] 'inform' me that students were violent and police felt they need to use pepper spray."

During the special meeting, one of the big questions raised were what the protocol is for staff during violent situations involving students.

Some trustees also want a briefing on current district policies when it comes to violence.

"They are on our website," said Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara during the meeting. "So I would behoove the board. I know that the new board members we went over the policies. So I would suspect that as an elected official that you would read the policies. I think the grace would be for both us staff and I know we manage and follow board policy that it would behoove the board to do the same since they are open on our website."

While no decisions were made regarding violence in schools Friday, the board voted 4 to 3 to have a presentation on current policies regarding school violence, data on violence including stats from the last month, and an historical overview of past initiatives.

However, none of this will be presented at next week's meeting.

They're waiting until the March 10th board meeting.
