Metro officers are investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy in the southeast valley as a possible child abuse case.

Officers have arrested 31-year-old Kenneth Robinson in connection with the boy's death. According to officers, he is not the father of the victim.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 7-year-old Richard Findley Jr. of Las Vegas. His official cause of death is still pending.

According to LVMPD Lt. Grant Rogers, the death of the 7-year-old child was reported Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m. at Siegel Suites in the 4800 block of Boulder Highway near Flamingo Road. The report originally came in as a medical call.

The child was transported to Sunrise Trauma and pronounced deceased around 30 minutes later.

In a media briefing, Lt. Dan McGrath with Metro's Homicide Section said the victim appeared to have severe trauma throughout his body and reports of ligature marks, associated with child abuse.

An investigation by Metro's Homicide Section in conjunction with the Abuse and Neglect Section led detectives to believe Robinson was responsible for the child's injuries.

"These are some of the most difficult investigations that any of us have to deal with," Lt. McGrath said. "Even with the most experienced detectives, it's very sad that we are investigating this as a child abuse death."

According to Lt. McGrath, the incident was originally called in as a medical request, so the Clark County Fire Department arrived at the scene before police.

Firefighters then reported the incident to police, believing the death was suspicious.

A total of seven people were living in the apartment where the incident occurred, including the mother of the victim, the man detained by police, and five children -- including the victim.

Officers say Child Protective Services will take custody of the remaining children while officers investigate.

Metro's Homicide Section will take the lead on the investigation, working along with the LVMPD Abuse and Neglect Section.

Robinson was taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, facing one count of open murder.

This is the 145th homicide investigated in Metro's jurisdiction in 2016.
