Security guard fires shots inside Ross department store; police shoot suspect

UPDATE (8/13): The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Bryon Bunitsky, a 47-year-old officer who has been employed with the LVMPD since October 1999.

Officer Bunitsky is assigned to the Community Policing Division’s Enterprise Area Command. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of the incident.

LVMPD officers have surrounded a Target store near Blue Diamond Road and Valley View Boulevard.

One family who witnessed the incident reports that a security guard was fired at the Ross. The security guard reportedly threw down his vest and said he was coming back for a manager and two other people.

The family says that minutes later they heard gunshots and hid in the dressing rooms.

Police confirm that the guard fired at the manager of the store. The manager was not injured in the shooting.

Another witness reports that she saw the security guard sitting calmly on a bench. She says the guard put a gun to her head and told her not to go inside the store.

The witness says she ran away after the confrontation. Minutes later she saw police run by and heard five gunshots.

LVMPD reports that the suspect opened fire on police, and officers returned fire, hitting the suspect once. The suspect has been transported to an area hospital and is currently in surgery. His condition is not known.

The witness recorded the aftermath.

Blue Diamond was temporarily closed between Valley View and Arville Street as police investigated the scene. The road has now been re-opened, but Valley View Boulevard north of Blue Diamond remains closed.
