Pedestrian dies, DUI suspected after crash on Sahara near Maryland Parkway

The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified the crash victim as 59-year-old Gloria Santana-Mendoza of Las Vegas.


One person was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a pedestrian was struck and killed Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police reported the crash on Sahara at 15th Street at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers responded to to a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Lt. David Gordon said.

A spokesman for LVMPD later confirmed the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

In a statement, authorities said the pedestrian, a 59-year-old woman, was walking in a crosswalk at 15th Street when she was struck by a green 2002 Toyota Tacoma that was heading east on Sahara.

The Toyota came to a stop, then started heading east before bystanders were able to stop it more than 500 feet from the scene of the crash.

The driver, 58-year-old Darcy Cooper, showed signs of impairment, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say, and she was booked into Clark County Detention Center.

Sahara was closed for the investigation but has since reopened.
