LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) — Two people are dead after a crash this afternoon at motorsports complex in the southern Las Vegas Valley.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. at SpeedVegas, 14200 Las Vegas Blvd. South, according to Metro Lt. Steve Summers.
The victims, a male client in his 30s and an instructor in his late 50s, were in a white Lamborghini when the client/driver lost control at a curve.
Friends confirm to News 3 the driving instructor killed was 59-year-old Gil Ben Kely. The longtime instructor penned his two-time battle with breast cancer online. Friends describe him as a “fighter” who “really lived.”
Police say they believe the victims died upon impact.
Aaron Fessler, co-founder and chief executive officer, SpeedVegas, released this statement:
“Today, an accident on the track resulted in the deaths of a SpeedVegas employee and a customer. We are fully cooperating with investigators at this time.
“We are devastated by this tragic event and extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families and to our SpeedVegas team members who have lost a beloved colleague.”
SpeedVegas opened in April, offering locals and tourists the chance to drive luxury cars such as Lamborghinis or Ferraris around a 1.5-mile track.
The $30 million complex also featured an events center, restaurant lounge and a half-mile straightaway where drivers were able to test the vehicles limits at an estimated 140 mph.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will conduct the investigation as the crash occurred on the business property.
