Cash checking employee shot and killed near Jones and Vegas

A woman opening a business in the central valley was shot and killed at a busy shopping center.

Police say two men involved ran from the scene.

Yellow tape surrounded the check cashing business near Jones and Vegas Drive just after 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

Police say a woman opening the store for business was approached by two armed men inside the building.

Investigators say one of the suspects fired a single shot that hit the woman in her upper body. The victim was rushed to UMC where she later died.

Captain Robert Plummer with LVMPD homicide said, "As of right now it's too early to tell the motive behind it."

Plummer did not say if the woman was robbed.

Officers tell us the two suspects ran away into a nearby neighborhood east of Jones. Investigators say the victim was able to make the 911 call herself for help.

Rosy Perez tells us she frequently uses the check cashing business. She remembers recently having a conversation with the murder victim.

Police say they are looking at the check cashing business surveillance video to figure out what happened. Residents living nearby the store like Pastor Samuel Bottley say this shooting is troubling.

"Naturally, we are saddened even though I did not know the lady. I'm saddened because she's a life and that life's been taken away from the earth", said Bottley.

Perez and others who knew the victim say they will always remember her smile. Perez hopes the men responsible for the murder are caught soon.

"It makes me feel worried. I feel worried and concerned", says Perez.
