Man charged in shooting death of woman in southwest valley

A 51-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of a woman in the southwest valley early Thursday.

A woman died shortly after she struggled with a man inside a residence just before 8 a.m. in the 9000 block of College Green Street, near West Pebble Road and South Durango Drive.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 41-year-old Nicole Nguyen of Las Vegas. Her official cause of death was a gunshot wound of the chest and the manner was ruled a homicide.

About 7:58 a.m. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers were sent to a residence. Arriving officers located a man and a juvenile inside of the home and a woman in the garage with a gunshot wound. The woman was transported to St. Rose San Martin where she was pronounced deceased.

The investigation initiated by the LVMPD Homicide Section indicated that the man , later identified as 51-year-old John Fitzgerald Gonzalez, and the woman were inside the garage when the incident occurred. Detectives believe there was an argument that led to a physical altercation over a weapon. During the struggle the victim was shot.

As a result of the investigation, Gonzalez was arrested for one count of murder and transported to the Clark County Detention Center.
