According to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department news release, Villanueva and Hollopeter were in a dating relationship and had recently had problems.

Hollopeter waived her right to a 15-day preliminary hearing in the court of Judge Joseph Sciscento. She is scheduled to return to court at 9 a.m. May 1.

A good friend of the victim says Hollopeter dated Villanueva for about nine years and described her as socially awkward.

"I still don't believe it. I mean just a couple short years ago, she made a diaper cake for this guy [his child] and was at my wife's baby shower and now Joe's gone and she's on trial for murder. It's just unfathomable," said Beau Gottsmith, friend of Villanueva. "He did show up at my house about a week before the incident and was talking about, you know, things were kind of ending but he wanted to end them amicably and you know he was still concerned about her well-being ... going to pick her up that night and unfortunately that was the last I saw of him. "

Villanueva's family will conduct a memorial service 1 p.m. Sunday at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1601 E. Washington Ave.
