Aeromexico plane crashes in Durango, Mexico shortly after takeoff


Mexican officials say an Aeromexico plane crashed in the northern state of Durango, Mexico Tuesday.

The airline said on twitter that it is working to gather additional information and would provide more details as they become available.

Aeromexico flight 2431 took off from Guadalupe international airport at 3:08 pm central time and was due to land in Mexico city one hour and a half later.

It is not yet known how many people were on board the plane when it crashed.

Aeromexico said it was an Embraer 190 plane that can carry up to 100 passengers.

Pictures from the scene show thick black smoke rising from the jet which went down in a lightly wooded area not far from the airport.

Emergency from Durango are on the scene as fire crews battle to extinguish the flames.
