It took a specially-trained team just under an hour to rescue a construction worker who was trapped in a trench, under a 6 thousand-pound metal plate.

The man was part of a crew working on sewer lines on Washington Blvd and 9th Street in Ogden.

Battalion Chief Mike Slater, with Ogden Fire Department, said the rescue team had to stabilize the metal plates, which lined the walls of the trench, before they could free the victim from under the fallen trench.

The man was rushed to the hospital after the rescue but for privacy reasons Slater did not release his name or details about his injuries.

Slate said the use of steel plates in trenches is common at construction sites and the practice is usually safe.

He did not know why in this case, the plate collapsed.
