Childhood Obesity

The Problem of Childhood Obesity.

Obesity is a worsening problem in recent years the rate of obesity has tripled since the 1970’s. In the United States presently 1 out of 5 children are considered obese, in Nevada 1 out of 3 children are considered overweight or obese. These children are at increased risk for asthma, diabetes, and joint problems these children are also at an increased risk for developing adult obesity.

What step can be taken to improve this outlook?

The children can learn how to eat healthy and exercise and attempt to limit the amount of screen time are the first best steps. By screen time, I mean television, video games and tablets these are one of our greatest barriers to overcome. There’s benefits with regular exercise the children can have increased and improved cardio-respiratory fitness they can help control their weights, they can help lesson some feelings of anxiety and depression even and prevent the issues I mentioned earlier. We can also alter the environment the children are in which would be their home their school or their community this way here we can help them to achieve and maintain a more realistic weight.

KidFit is a comprehensive program that helps encourage childhood nutrition and exercise. It is a program I have been involved with since 2016, it works in conjunction with the Vegas Roots Community Garden where the children learn how to grow their own vegetables and eat healthy. Overall the children have benefited and changed their habits towards eating and towards their exercise.

Lastly I’d just like to say that I’d like to share my passion with pediatrics with you and your family and here at Southwest Medical our goal is do the best care possible for your family.
